예멘의 미스터리한 구멍, 싱크홀(Sink Hole), 바르호우트의 우물(Well of Barhout), 지옥의 우물(Well of Hell)
예멘(Yemen)에는 마라주의 사막 한가운데에 위치한 정체불명의 구멍이 있습니다.
폭은 대략 30미터에 깊이는 100~250미터로 추정되며, 마치 우물처럼 생겨서 바르호우트의 우물(Well of Barhout) 이라고도 불리는데요.
하지만, 물이 고여있거나 물이 흐른 어떤 흔적도 없고, 안에 무엇이 있는지 또 진짜 깊이가 어느 정도인지 정체불명, 용도불명, 아무것도 밝혀진 바가 없어서 일명 지옥의 우물(Well of Hell)이라고도 알려졌습니다.
올 해 2021년 6월, 예멘 마라주의 지질 조사 광물자원국에서 우물 내부 조사에 들어갔는데요.
이 우물은 산소가 희박하고 공기도 순환하지 않아 도저히 바닥까지 갈 수는 없었다고 합니다.
조사대는 우물 아래 약 60미터 지점 까지 도달했지만, 우물 안에서는 계속 썩은 달걀 냄새가 진동을 하는데다가 산소도 희박해 더 이상 내려가는 것은 불가능한 상황이라고 밝혔습니다.
썩은 달걀 냄새라고 하면, 유황 냄새 혹은 구멍에 빠져 죽은 동물들의 사체 냄새가 아닐까 하는 여러 가지 추측이 가능한데요.
그런데, 예멘 현지인들은, 그 우물 안에 무시무시한 악마가 갇혀있다면서, 가까이 가면 우물에 갇혀있는 악마들이 사람을 구멍으로 끌어당긴다고 생각해 우물에 절대로 접근 금지하고 있습니다.
심지어, 우물의 존재에 대해 언급하는 것 조차도 두려워한다고 합니다.
그런 가운데, 연구자들은 초화산(supervolcano) 일수도 있다고 추측을 했는데요.
하지만, 더 깊은 곳으로의 접근이 어려워 후속 연구는 아직 이루어지지 않고 있습니다.
예멘 사막에 위치한 거대 구멍 그 아래에는 과연 무엇이 존재하고 있을까요?
In Yemen, there is an unidentified hole in the middle of the desert in the state of Mara.
It is estimated to be about 30 meters wide and 100 to 250 meters deep. It is also called the Well of Barhout because it looks like a well.
However, it was also known as the Well of Hell because there was no stagnant water, no traces of water flowing, and nothing was known about what was inside or how deep it was.
In June 2021 of this year, the Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Resources in Mara, Yemen, started investigating the inside of the well.
It is said that the well could not reach the bottom because oxygen was scarce and air was not circulating.
The investigation team reached a point about 60 meters below the well, but the smell of rotten eggs continued to vibrate inside the well, and oxygen was thin, so it was impossible to go down further.
When it comes to the smell of rotten eggs, it is possible to guess whether it is the smell of sulfur or the smell of dead animals that have fallen into the hole.
However, Yemeni locals say that a terrifying demon is trapped in the well, and if you get close to it, the demons trapped in the well pull people into the hole, so they absolutely forbid access to the well.
Even mentioning the existence of the well is said to be terrifying.
Meanwhile, researchers speculated that it could be a supervolcano.
However, due to difficulties in accessing the deeper depths, follow-up studies have not been conducted yet.
